Programmes and Activities

SGEM 2014

Xinghua Primary School held the Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) week from 14 April to 17 April 2014. The SGEM week this year aims to improve the pupils’ communicative competence and encourage the use of Singapore Standard English. These objectives are in line with the national SGEM objective of encouraging Singaporeans to speak grammatically correct English that is universally understood. During the Week the pupils were involved in a host of engaging EL activities at every level. The activities included a contest to name the school’s reading corner, Reader's Theatre, Choral Reading and Poetry Recitation. There were quizzes and games, including ‘Spelling Bee' and ‘Tongue Twisters'. Pupils were also exposed to 2 more public speaking opportunities through two activities, ‘A Broadcast Journalist for a Day’ and ‘Xinghua Speaks’.  On the whole, the SGEM activities were all well-received by the pupils. The EL Department will continue with its effort to raise pupils’ confidence in communication.
